Dr Constant van Schalkwyk
Specialist Plastic Surgeon
Dr Constant van Schalkwyk is an Australian-trained Specialist Plastic Surgeon whose practice spans cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
His training has taken him through major surgical centres in Australia and London, combining broad specialist plastic surgery training with advanced fellowships in complex microsurgical reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. He brings that breadth of experience to a considered, individual approach to plastic surgery in Sydney.
Training
After completing his medical degree, Dr van Schalkwyk commenced general medical and surgical training before being selected into the accredited Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Surgical Education and Training program.
His specialist plastic surgery training was undertaken through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and culminated in Fellowship of the College (FRACS) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr van Schalkwyk trained across major hospitals in Sydney and Melbourne. During this period he also completed a Master of Surgery in Surgical Anatomy at the University of Sydney. After completing specialist training, he worked as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at Royal North Shore Hospital and Liverpool Hospital before travelling to London for further advanced training.
The Royal Marsden Hospital, London
At The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, a specialist cancer centre with extensive experience in complex cancer reconstruction, Dr van Schalkwyk undertook a senior fellowship in microvascular and reconstructive plastic surgery. The fellowship placed him within multidisciplinary teams managing complex oncological defects and provided advanced experience in microsurgical breast reconstruction, head and neck reconstruction, pelvic and perineal reconstruction, chest-wall and sarcoma defects, lymphatic microsurgery and complex soft-tissue reconstruction.
During his fellowship, The Royal Marsden became the first hospital in the United Kingdom to introduce the Symani robotic microsurgery system. Dr van Schalkwyk worked within that programme and was part of the team involved in the first robotic microsurgical pedicle dissections using the system's dedicated dissection instruments. This experience complemented his broader training in conventional microsurgery and complex oncological reconstruction.
BAAPS Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship
Dr van Schalkwyk completed a BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) Cosmetic Surgery Fellowship in London, based at Weymouth Street Hospital and supervised by Mr Simon Eccles LVO, a senior consultant plastic surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital and past President of the Plastic Surgery Section of the Royal Society of Medicine.
The fellowship provided advanced training across facial, breast and body aesthetic surgery, including facial rejuvenation and facelift surgery, modern aesthetic breast surgery, rhinoplasty and body contouring. An important part of the experience was exposure to different approaches to the same aesthetic problem, refining both operative technique and the judgement required to select an appropriate operation for an individual patient.
His mentors included Patrick Mallucci in aesthetic breast surgery; Norman Waterhouse, Barry Jones and Jesper Sørensen in facial aesthetic, craniofacial and reconstructive surgery; and Charles East and Lucian Ion in rhinoplasty and facial surgery. Further anatomical training through ISAPS at the University of Liège in Belgium complemented this experience in rhinoplasty and facial aesthetic surgery.
Practice in Sydney
Dr van Schalkwyk's Sydney practice encompasses cosmetic surgery of the face, breast and body, together with reconstructive plastic surgery. His approach draws on the complementary disciplines of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, combining detailed anatomical understanding with proportion, restraint and attention to detail. He operates at North Shore Private Hospital, Castlecrag Private Hospital and Hunters Hill Private Hospital.
Consultation is centred on understanding each patient's concerns, assessing their individual anatomy and providing clear and realistic advice. Treatment is tailored accordingly, with careful consideration of the available options, their limitations and risks.
